On board Lady of Mann (2), Douglas to Liverpool. Gale force 8 West South West. Halfway through the crossing I was putting something in the back of a car on the level car deck near the entrance to the galley. The ship rolled and the car next to me rolled forward and pushed the car door closed on me, trapping my leg. As the ship rolled the other way the car rolled back towards the gate railings. At this point a crew member was walking up the car ramp from the stern. He dropped his cup of tea and grabbed a wooden chock to wedge under the wheels. The driver was found and he apologised for not putting his handbrake on enough. A few more bad rolls and the car may have gone through the gates. On arrival at Liverpool the wind hand worsened and we had to be towed to the Landing Stage by two tugs. (Photograph: © D. Worth)
